How to remove parts from a video

Most video editors make you rebuild a timeline just to drop a few seconds. When all you want is to cut unwanted sections out and keep the rest, that is overkill. Before you start

- This is a re-encode, not a lossless trim. Because the kept parts are stitched into one new file, the video is re-encoded at high quality — expect a small, normal quality change rather than a bit-for-bit copy.
- It runs in real time. Exporting takes roughly as long as the kept footage plays. A 10-minute result takes about 10 minutes to write. Keep the tab open and in the foreground while it works.
- Size is limited by memory, not by an upload cap. Nothing is uploaded, but your browser still has to hold the video while it decodes and re-encodes. Very large files are slower and can run out of memory — more headroom on a desktop, less on a phone.
Remove parts from a video in 4 steps
- Open the tool and drop your video in. Go to Remove Parts from Video and choose or drag an MP4, MOV or WebM. It loads locally and shows a timeline with an audio waveform underneath.
- Mark the sections to remove. Drag across the timeline to select a section, then click Mark for deletion. The flat stretches on the waveform are your pauses and silences, which makes them easy to spot. Repeat for every mistake, pause or dead spot — each marked range shows as a coloured band with draggable handles you can nudge for a precise edge.
- Or auto-detect the quiet gaps. Click Find quiet gaps and the tool scans the audio for stretches below a loudness threshold and marks them for you. Tune it with the Sensitivity and Minimum-gap settings, then adjust, restore or clear any mark by hand. This is the fastest way to clean dead air out of a talking-head recording.
- Export and download. Click export. The kept parts are re-encoded and joined into one MP4 on your device, with audio kept in sync, and the file downloads when it is done.
Best settings for common jobs
Cleaning up a talking-head or webcam recording
Use Find quiet gaps first — it removes the long pauses and dead air in one pass — then scrub through and hand-tweak any cut that lands on a breath or a soft word. Start at Medium sensitivity and a 0.5s minimum gap; raise the minimum gap to 1s if it is trimming natural pauses you want to keep.
Removing a mistake or an interruption
Do this by hand: drag across the exact span, mark it, and fine-tune the handles while watching the playhead. You can mark as many separate sections as you like before exporting once.
Screen recordings and tutorials
Trim the "let me find the file…" gaps and the silence before you start talking. The waveform makes those flat spots obvious, so you rarely need to hunt frame by frame.
Troubleshooting
- Export is slow. That is expected — it re-encodes in real time, so it tracks the kept length, not the original. Removing more (keeping less) makes it faster. Keep the tab in the foreground; a background tab can pause the capture.
- The tab ran out of memory on a big file. Try a shorter source, a more compressed input, or a desktop with more RAM. You can also compress the video first, then edit the smaller file.
- "Find quiet gaps" is disabled. The video has no audio track to analyse — mark the sections by hand instead.
- Auto-detect cut into speech. Lower the sensitivity or raise the minimum gap, then re-scan; or just drag the offending band's handle to fix that one edge.
Is it private?
Yes. Everything — decoding, cutting, re-joining and encoding — happens in your browser using WebCodecs. The video is never sent to a server, there is no account, and there is no watermark. That also means a work recording, a personal clip or anything sensitive stays on your machine.
Quality and format notes
The result is MP4 with H.264 video, which plays almost everywhere. Because kept parts are joined into one new file, this is a re-encode at a high-quality setting rather than a lossless copy — in practice the difference is hard to see, and it is the trade-off that lets the joins be frame-accurate and the audio stay in sync.
